Sikandarpur office of the developer Emaar India saw a huge protest by homebuyers of the Emerald Hills township project during the last weekend. The issue was long overdue delivery of the promised flats. Emaar said it was taking “corrective measures” to deliver the project.
The homebuyers have been waiting since nine years for the project to be completed, when it was originally meant to be finished in three years. “The township was launched in July 2009. Possession was assured within 36 months from the date of signing of the builder-buyer agreement, which took place the same year. We were supposed to get possession by 2012-13,” said Sumit Aggarwal, a member of Emerald Hills Welfare Owners Association.
The homebuyers said they had already paid 90% of the amount to the builder. “Construction has not even started in some parts of Emerald Hills, while progress is very slow in other projects. Continuous dialogues with the builder have not resulted in any fruitful outcome till date, as their replies are always vague and misplaced. It is obvious that the developer is not interested in honouring timelines for handing over the units, along with all the committed amenities,” a protester said.
Buyers said they have filed complaints with several authorities, including DTCP and CM Window, to no avail. “The developer has been consistently delaying the date of delivery. We are paying both house rent and EMI. Emaar should commit date of delivery and compensate as per Rera norms,” another homebuyer said.
Emaar India said, “Historically, there have been delays in execution of ongoing projects, and such delays are a matter of great concern for Emaar India. We have taken corrective measures to execute and deliver ongoing projects at the earliest. We are confident that our efforts will soon bear results.”
