Greater Hyderabad civic body razes encroachments, families given compensation

Coming down on encroachments, Greater Hyderabad civic body has identified a total of 40 identified encroachments to be razed at Afzal Sagar Nala in Nampally area of Hyderabad. Fourteen of these permanent constructions have already been razed and the remaining 34 temporary constructions would be demolished soon.

These encroachments are also critical bottlenecks along the nala. Due to the nala encroachments, the houses in Mangwada and Mallepally used to get inundated during downpour. The structures are located on Ghatala Masjid, New Mallepally to Dargah Hazrat Mirza Sardar Baig (Nampally) stretch.

"The demolition was carried under police protection, some buildings were three-storied. Remaining 34 encroachments will also be razed," said Mohd. Khaleeluddin GHMC assistant city planner of Mehdipatnam circle.

Out of 50 families whose homes are razed, 16 families are given compensation and 34 have been given houses under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. "Total 97 lakh is given to families as compensation and remaining encroachments will be taken up after counselling the families. The demolition will be executed under police protection to maintain the law and order," said a top GHMC official.

The move came after MAUD minister KT Rama Rao instructed the GHMC to raze all the buildings encroaching the nalas and make sure there is sufficient drainage to prevent submerging of homes.
